NEW RAY BANS & BARE FACED BEAUTY

This week hasn't been all lollypops and bikinis, it's actually been a really challenging week. On Thursday I was supposed to fly out to Italy for a month or so to see my family and give my mind some space. This didn't happen. I'll cut the story short because most of you probably just want to see my new shades, but  I didn't fly out. I had a 3 hour panic attack and was completely incapable of leaving the house. It was probably a combination of factors that finally dissuaded me, but everything happens for a reason, I believe. I've always suffered with anxiety, especially associated with travelling but it had actually died down for a good few years, util now, where it returned with a vengeance. I was incredibly down for a few days with both my depression and anxiety hitting hard on the old cranium walls. I wallowed for a couple of days, but then I came to the conclusion that it was not okay to be so hard on myself. So instead of writing to you from the beach house in Sardinia, I'm writing from my usual spot, which I'm okay with for now.

My week in insta-snaps, if you don't already follow me

Anyone in Britain will be able to relate to my appreciation of this beautiful weather we've had for the past 3 days, so I've completely embraced it and accepted that I will have a tan, holiday or not. I treated myself to a new pair of perfectly retro-looking Ray Bans. I adore Ray Ban, they're a classic and timeless brand but also come up with the most awesome new styles.  Probably the most justifiable purchase during the spring and summer months. You know the quality is guaranteed and there is a style for every personality and every face shape. I purchased mine at a local Sunglass Hut here in Brighton where there is an an excellent selection. Buying them in store means that you are really able to experiment with styles and see what suits your face best.

The day I photographed my shades, I was just chilling in the garden- make-up less- and I basically want to encourage all the women out there to completely embrace your bare faces. As much as we all love to transform our faces with bronzer, lip liner, eyeliner etc. It's so unrealistic to think that we should always adopt this appearance. I don't have flawless skin, I have scars, blemishes, freckles, stretch marks, an ass that just won't quit and all the rest of it, but I think there's something perfectly natural about these things that we label as 'imperfections'.  I will always whole-heartedly argue that there is a definite beauty to a naked face and we should definitely be celebrating this with everything else that is stripped back during the summer months.

Buy these exact Ray Bans here
or have a peruse on the Ray Ban site for more beautiful styles.

Peace!

MINTY FRESH

So I photographed this outfit over a month ago which is why it's not overly summery, but fresh enough for the season, I hope. It's simplistic and clean which has been the theme of most my outfits this season- a far more timeless and classic style compared to pieces I may have chosen in the past. I did actually type out this entire post yesterday and my shit of a computer decided not to save it, so I've had to start from scratch so excuse my brevity; I'm going to jump straight in with my 'Jamie' jeans.

I've said it time and time again, but Topshop is my holy grail for jeans. I usually go for the 'Jonie' style which is more of a disco pant fit with a jegging inspired fabric, but after having fallen in love with my pair of ripped black Jamie's, I thought I'd go right ahead and try them in another colour style. I was not disappointed, these are my new favourites. I sit between a size 26 and 28 so I need to size up in order for the jeans to fit me properly on the backside and therefore tighten the waist quite a lot with a belt and the Jamie's have loop holes in order for me to do this, which the Joni's don't have. I know a lot of women with this same problem. For me, the rips completely make the jean, as we all know that knee rips and slits have been worn by everyone and their mother this season and I am embracing it too because it just adds a bit of edge and interest to what could be a very plain outfit. I obviously went for the Petite, but they are also available in the core and Tall collections so we can all enjoy these timeless beauties.

Let's move swiftly on before this post turns into a novel, the piece de resistance of my life for the past few months have been my mint green Nike Air Max. Until now, I would never have been seen in public wearing a gym style sneaker as I'm more of a heel girl but it's about finding the right style and pair for you. Seeing as I'm only 4ft10.5 I had a slight phobia of flat shoes because no 20 year old woman wants to look like an over-dressed eight year old, but I have broken the mould. If you choose the right colour, they will look super sleek and classic paired with any outfit. I realise that £100 is steep for a pair of sneakers but I'm so glad I took the plunge. I kind of want them in every colour because they can also been worn for a good old run or just running errands. I will say though, that after wearing them for hours on end they don't perhaps support the sole of the foot as much as I would like, but that can be sorted with an insole. I also love pairing them with pretty pastel coloured socks that poke out the top for a preppier look.

As I said before the rest of the outfit is very minimal with classic neutral pieces and accents of green accessories because I just have a thing for green. I do have an offensive amount of summer clothes however, so look forward to some posts geared towards a hotter climate as I plan to go on holiday next month.

As always, let me know what you think!

JULY LOVE LIST '15

Last month I missed out on my monthly love list. I do feel that things are quite repetitive in terms of summer trends with the very typical floral printed tops and tan sandals- for me it's really boring. Since spring I have been whole heartedly obsessed with lime and mint greens. My style has changed massively from last summer, and my picks for holiday are far more classic and simplistic, I'm much more interested in pieces that can be interchanged with each other on a daily basis.
The slip dress is the perfect piece to own for the season, I want one in every colour but it would be a waste considering our limited summer months here in the UK. I think it's also become quite apparent that I also have a problematic obsession with candles because theres nothing better than a fresh smelling room(especially the scent of lime-oh my!) with the breeze coming in through the window.

I guess I've comprised a bit more of an alternative summer mood board here but all items are very much appropriate for a trip around Europe but equally perfect if you're staying put and want to inject a bit of the tropics in to your life!

1. Copper Terranium Planter- Urban Outfitters, 2. Lomography Instant Analogue Camera- John Lewis, 3. Glow Stick in Heat- Topshop, 4. New Balance 996 Lime Trainers- Asos, 5.  Round Classic Ray Ban- Ray ban, 6. Black Ripped Mom Shorts- Topshop, 7. Flamingo Lime & Cedar Candle- Urban Outfitters, 8. Frends Taylor Headphones in Rose Gold- Urban Outfitters, 9. Hawaii Print Slip Dress- Topshop Boutique, 10. Lime Light Soda Candle & Jar Tea light Holder- Primark, 11. Black Strappy Body- Miss Selfridge, 12. Leather Messenger Bag with Tassels- Zara, 13. Virgin Mojito Body Scrub & Virgin Mojito Body Butter- The Body Shop

THE INVISIBLE ILLNESS

So the few of you that actually read my blog may have noticed that I've been away from the blog for a while now, and it's not because I've been overloaded with work of juggling a busy schedule, the painful yet apparent reality is that I've had a terrible relapse with my depression. Now this is not something I've mentioned on the blog because it's a bit of an escape for me and originally I wanted my blog to be completely fashion and style related but I am one of those people who wants to raise awareness of mental illness and stamp out the stigma. I guess I should embrace this as a platform to do so. I believe it is an incredibly complex and sensitive subject, so I will do my best to encapsulate everything as articulately as possible.

As far as I'm aware, I've been suffering with depression and anxiety for about 5 years now. Like most people, I was completely un-aware that there was actually anything wrong with me. As time passed, I went out a lot less, I ate a lot more, I formed many-a bad habit. From my personal experience, once you're captured by the wrath of depression, it is immensely difficult to break free. For a good few years, I never believed there was any harm in (what I eventually realised was) my really unhelpful behaviours and habits associated with the anxiety and depression. At the start my unhappiness was hugely based upon my weight- like many women- and my grades, as I was studying for exams at the time. My last few years of school finished as I was 16 and although I did pretty darn well academically, I was metaphorically left with a very bitter taste in my mouth. I realised that although I had finished school, I was still incredibly unfulfilled and empty inside. I can't even remember the specifics that far back, these past years have more or less been a complete blur to me, but I think I went to see the doctor and he brushed it off as 'low mood'.

I began college, continuing to believe that there was nothing wrong with me, perhaps just socially awkward and a bit sad sometimes,  but I had no clue I was about to embark upon an utterly draining, de-moralising and painful few years to say the least. College was torture for me I went there knowing no-one and although people wanted to know me and spend time with me, I was completely un-capable of partaking in any kind of social situation, I pushed people away for years- both friends and strangers. I can't remember the amount of times I ate my lunch in the toilet cubicle or sat alone for hours waiting for my next class. If I'm not mistaken, the summer after my first year of college is where the counselling began, as well as the suicidal thoughts, the self-harm followed by the medication and referral upon referral to mental health specialists. I found the second year of college completely overwhelming and only attended about 30% of the year. I simply could not face it. I'd spend days on end in bed, just eating, sleeping, maybe shed the occasional tear and starred at my bedroom wall- emotionally, there was nothing there, and I think that's what depression can be- a constant state of emotional paralysation. I was still very much consumed by my appearance and gain of weight. I was incapable of taking any kind of action towards looking at plans for the future like University etc. because it was un-comprehendable for me at the time. It still is to this day and I continue to pluck up the courage every day to take action for my future, but on so many of these days, I wrongly let my illness hold me back.

So college finished, I came out with great grades considering my attendance and I began my gap year. The depression held me back from finding a job and making a CV for a few months, but being the person I am, I could not sit on my ass doing nothing, not only because I knew it was bad for  my mental state but because I like being busy- It's in my character. I found a full time job, which kept my depression at bay for a while, even though I fought my demons every morning. I loved being able to earn my own money and it meant that I was constantly interacting in social situations which was excellent for me, I faced a lot of challenges but learnt to overcome most, I had bad days but I was doing well and proving so many people wrong. I began feeling happy in myself and my appearance for the first time in my life. 7 months later, I was no longer happy there and I truly wanted to focus on my career in the fashion industry. Now, I've left my job and have found myself in a tricky situation.

All this time the depression was still there, perhaps whispering instead of shouting, the suicidal thoughts have been pretty constant over these past 4 years because I guess once you have been that low and dragged along rock bottom for so long, it's incredibly difficult to pick yourself back up. I'm not saying I never laugh and never have good days because I do. I smile often, I dress well, I'm polite and kind-hearted and that, I believe, is what makes it so incredibly difficult for people to acknowledge that I have severe depression. I don't know what the hell I was expecting from life, it certainly wasn't this, maybe I watched far too many Disney films. One day I may find the cause of all this, maybe it was the bullying at school that I didn't think affected me but it has in fact given me massive self-confidence issues or maybe it was the perfect image of how my life was supposed to be in my head that fucked me up the most. At the moment I don't have a job to focus on as I did before, but I've made some positive choices in the mess of the past month. This morning I decided to go for a run for the first time in about 5 years, not to loose weight or anything but because it's a mental challenge for me. I felt incredible that I had left the house, faced so many demons and was somewhat productive with my day. I'm writing this post on a 'good' day because on the bad, I can't even get out of bed or brush my teeth- that's the reality of how consuming depression is. This is a super brief overview of my experience with depression because I could literally write a book, but I want it to be easy and relatable for people to read.

On that note I will draw the curtain however, I will offer a few pieces of advice for the 1 in 4 of you that are going through hell everyday with your mental health, as I am. I don't believe myself to be any kind of guru at all- god no! However, I've learnt a lot so I will go ahead and share;

1. So many people don't get it. Truth is, unless you've had it, you never really will. I guess we must make it our job to educate the world and break the stigma instead of allowing others' ignorance to bring us down further.

2.  I've been low, I've been high. I've seen so many doctors, nurses and councillors and none have helped me- that doesn't mean they can't help you. At the end of the day, if we want to change we must get up off our asses and decide we won't have another bad day, as I did today.

3. If you take anti-depressants (that is a personal choice. they help some, not others), as I do, you must keep it constant. I'm guilty of missing days at a time and my mood and hormones go completely irrational and it makes your situation a thousand times worse.

4. We have to help ourselves right? Self harming is not helpful in any way, shape or form. It's so complex to understand, I know this because I cut myself a few weeks ago after over a year of not harming myself. Try to re-direct your anger and pain of that moment somewhere else, I don't know where, I will never say 'take a walk'. I cannot bear the phrase. You know what it is that makes you feel better, you know what you enjoy and if you don't, find something that you can pour your heart into like painting or collecting butterflies! I don't know what the hell people do these days...

5. You are so incredibly worth it and you are as deserving as anyone else to be here on this weird old planet. You must hang on in there, for yourself but for all those others that have no voice. Your good days will be so good. We can't let the illines win, this includes bi-polar disease and anxiety etc. because we are here to fight it.

That concludes my little summary of depression, I will probably end up reading my own advice on the bad days, because often I think we just need reminding and need a voice of reason amongst the chaos of our thoughts. I hope this helps in some way because I've had little guidance and advice that was helpful, so here it is first hand.

Sending much love to you all.
Peace!

SASSY SUMMER SANDALS

I thought it would be a good idea to create a post celebrating the beautiful summer shoes that one can find online and on the high street at the moment. I feel like women often wrongly presume that it is better to invest in winter boots and accessories, especially here in England as our Summer months are limited in comparison to our plenteous months of winter weather. Whilst this is partly true and often our footwear choices in summer can be neglected and ignored, I have found a handful of beautiful sandals worth investing in for the spring and summer months that I know you will thank me for. I guess the key to summer sandals and shoes is versatility, you want a pair that you can wear with shorts and jeans but also dresses and skirts which is why I've selected a very muted nude/neutral colour palette that will undoubtably go with everything.

As always there are trends inspired from the catwalks that run through our high street lines of footwear and this season it's all about the simplistic and minimalistic Scandinavian inspired 'pool slider'. The idea behind the pool slider is that of course it can be worn on holiday by the pool but thrown together with a pair of boyfriend jeans and a relaxed oversized white shirt you have the perfectly effortless 'summer in the city' vibe nailed. On this same wavelength of the Scandinavian inspired look, the Mule comes in to play. It is again very reminiscent of the minimalist look with the sharp lines and cuts and can be styled very similarly to the pool slider but has the added bonus of looking perfectly preppy with a ditsy summer dress or playsuit

A trend that is certainly making itself prominent this season is the lace up shoe, weather it be a lace up heeled sandal suitable more so for going out, or the classic gladiator inspired flat lace up sandal that can be worn with endless casual outfits. On the more high-end spectrum it is always an idea to invest in a pair of statement chunky heeled sandals especially this season with the 70's trend being celebrated in all its glory. They can be beautiful with a pair of denim cut off's and a long flowing kimono but also with a an elegant black jumpsuit for the evening.

The pointed flat slingback is probably the most practical of all the shoes. The pointed toe is something that we have seen emerging throughout autumn/winter but is being glorified in a big way this spring season. I adore pointed flats because they are truly sophisticated and extremely sassy- they can immediately give an outfit that chic edge, especially in these neutral tones.

I'd advise not being hesitant in trying out a new style of shoe like the mule for example as all the shoes listed above aim to encapsulate that classic spring/summer zest that we should all be injecting into our wardrobe. As always let me know what you think!

OOTD: EARLY SUMMER ZEPHYR

I'm incredibly aware of the fact that my last OOTD was the Khaki celebration post back in February, I'm literally a terrible blogger but as I explained in my previous post, it's been non-stop and I've probably missed out on a lot of sassy spring 'should-have-been' outfits but I'm hoping to make up for it. The weather in Britain, or at least down here in Brighton has been so disappointing given that it's almost June and we've had nothing but cloud and rain apart from a few days. Today was one of those perfect days with sun but a beautiful spring breeze. I embraced the life out of it!

I'm going to go straight to the jeans, because I have been utterly loving them. We all know rips are hugely in this season, so I invested in this black pair from Topshop. I know £45 may be pricey for some but as I always say, I never compromise with my jeans. They are from the Petite range, of course, and I'm so in love, they're so perfect- I've worn them out in the evening but also dressed down with a casual blouse or t-shirt like today.

The jeans and shoes are so 'statement' that I felt it fitting pairing them with a very relaxed classic white sleeveless blouse- ideal for the entirety of spring and summer-, with a bit of colour and print (I'm very into 'boho' and paisley styles) in the long, sleeveless waistcoat. All very juxtaposing pieces that I feel work well together especially when tied in with all my gold go-to accessories. This clear bag has been my everyday bag for about the past 3 months, it's so chic and elegant but also so simplistic and goes with absolutely everything- a classic Zara piece.

My tie-up black 'suedette' heeled sandals are brand spanking new from Asos. As soon as I saw them I had that moment of picturing an array of possible outfit choices featuring these babies running through my mind, they we're pretty much a no brainer. Again suitable for day or night, the upper is made of a suede like fabric and the laces are more like threads of elastic which I don't know if I'm too crazy about. They look insanely sassy, which I'm obviously all about.  In terms of comfort they are a dream because the heel height is nothing precarious but I did find they rubbed slightly at the front however that could well be because it was my first time wearing them. I will keep you posted on the comfort of these because like the jeans, they are £45 and you'd want to be completely happy with them before you go ahead and place the order.

MAY LOVE LIST & STYLE SNAPS

I appreciate that it has been almost two whole months since I have even posted, but with good reason. Back in march, I managed to catch every bug/virus going around- I have never been so sick in my life, so I obviously was bed bound and confined to my pyjamas and  the past month of April I've literally spent recovering. I don't even know how it got so bad, it was just one bug after another and then my anxiety came back in a big way because I was always so nauseous and afraid of being sick, so until recently I hadn't eaten properly for 2 months either. But I'm back and so ready for summer.

We actually managed to enjoy a few beautiful days of sunshine in April, so of course that was reflected in my style. I took a few quick snaps before going to work of a very summer inspired outfit, just to complete this little post, but I didn't have enough time to photograph a full blown OOTD. Just a moment of appreciation for this amazing jumpsuit. Moments over. Iv'e also got a few nice little posts in the pipeline to look forward to. Links to items below!
